How to Create Standout Book Printing

Expert insider tips on Getting The Most From Your book printing

There is much more to book printing than putting words on paper. If you are looking to print a book, you'll need to think about book size, different types of printing, cover design, and much more.

The type of book you are working on may have an impact on the size. These are
some standard sizes for different types of books:

  • Mass Market Paperback: 4 1/4 inches by 7 inches (approximately 114 by 178 mm, close to A5 size)
  • Trade Book, Handbook, or Fiction: 5 1/2 inches by 8 V2 inches (A5 45z,..by
210 mm) or 6 inches by 9 inches (approximately 152 by 229 mm, close to A5 size)
  • Manual or Textbook: 7 inches by 9 inches (approximately 178 by 229 mm, close to A4 size) or 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches (A4 210 by 297 mm)
  • Gift Book, Art Book, or Manual: 7 'A inches by 9 inches (approximately 190 by 229 mm)
  • Coffee Table Book: 9 inches by 12 inches (approximately 229 by 305 mm)

There are two main options when it comes to a printing method for your book. Lithograph printing uses a flexible metal or plastic plate mounted on a cylinder and will give you outstanding quality for both text and images. However, this can be a very expensive printing choice. Digital printing is less expensive and makes additional print runs quick, easy, and convenient. Your printing budget and what you need to print (type only vs. type plus images) will help you decide between the different printing methods.

You have many more choices available when it comes to binding your book. Often, the type of book you are printing will determine the type of binding you should choose. For the highest quality hardcover books, casebook binding is often the binding of choice. A sewn book is attached to a hard cover for a professional, high quality product.

Perfect book binding glues the outside edges of the paper together to create a flat edge; this is often seen in books, corporate and annual reports, and manuals. Smaller booklets, newsletters, catalogues, and brochures may be stapled on the fold (called saddle-stitch book binding) or on the side (called sidestitch book binding). A hinge made from looped wire is often used to bind reference manuals, calendars, and cookbooks -- this is known as double wire binding.

It doesn't hurt to find a book similar to the project you are planning and take a look at size, design, and binding method. A trip through the bookstore will give you an idea of standard designs for the type of book you pare planning to print.

A few last pointers for your book printing project:

  • If you'll be producing a hardcover book, think about laminating the cover -- this will give a professional, glossy finish to your project.
  • Books are traditionally printed in serif fonts -- the letters have little "hooks" on them to help the eye distinguish the different letters easily.
  • Talk to your printing professional for expert advice on size, printing, binding, and design.
